When I was just a child my parents took me to the drive in theatre. We were there to see Walt Disney's "The Apple Dumpling Gang". Since then, I have wondered what an apple dumpling tasted like. I have even had thoughts, of what an apple dumpling must consist of. This because I had had dumplings in meat stew. Wouldn't it be the same thing? Wouldn't it just taste like sweet apples and spice instead of meat and gravy?

Upon investigation, they didn't turn out to be what I thought a dumpling should be at all! It wasn't some soft blob that you through on top of something stew like! Yes, I admit it! I thought there must be some sort of apple stew, a person would make. Yet this is not what all the recipes instructed at all. The recipes all said you needed one whole apple for each dumpling and I thought surely, they would be cut up in a doughy mixture at least. The whole thing astounded me and I put the whole project on hold.
It happened months later, I started thinking about those apple dumplings again. Sure, they weren't made they way I thought a decent dumpling should be, but maybe I should give them a try? I looked up a recipe in the internet, complete with pictures and a video, "hmmm, this does seem so bad". I had all the ingredients and decided to give it a go. And besides, my childhood dream of actually eating an apple dumpling mustn't wait!
They were more than I ever expected and worth the wait! They turned out absolutely delicious! No they weren't what I expected, they were so much better than that. Often things don't turn out the way we had thought they would. We end up with preconceived notions about people and situations. Then we let go of our expectations and are far more able to embrace situations, people, and the recipes we never thought we would. And while you are embracing those situations and people, be sure to serve them apple dumplings! They'll love you for it.
